Ameren UE Power Plant, Grand Tower, Illinois
Service: Driven Pile
Ameren UE power company is on a fast paced schedule to upgrade their existing power plants. The Grand Tower power plant was originally built in 1955. The new project addition was to be bigger than the original plant. The addition would house two new natural gas turbines. These natural gas turbines would replace the coal system of generating power.
Subsurface was awarded two different contracts. The first contract was to drive and perform a pile loadtest at the site. The engineer had selected 12 3/4" pipe pile - closed end - 60 ft long. The site geology consisted of 5 to 8 ft of fill, 5 ft of silt to sand, and sand from 14 ft to 150 ft. The loadtest provided results that a 55 ton Friction pile would be acceptable. In March of 2000, Subsurface mobilized one of its Lima cranes and decided to use one of its Vulcan 80C pile hammers to start production pile. The project consisted of 650 pipe pile that was 60 ft long filled with 5000psi concrete. The job also consisted of 10,000 sq ft of sheet pile. The total project was completed in early May of 2000.
