Cupples Station Building 1, Downtown St. Louis, MO
Service: Building Retrofit with Micropile
This project involved installing 46 micropile in the basement of Building 1 of the Cupples Station
Warehouse Complex in Downtown St. Louis. The historic buildings of Cupples Station date to
the early 1900’s and were originally founded on timber piling. As part of the building retrofit and
redevelopment, new foundations were required.
Subsurface Constructors was the successful bidder and therefore installed 4.5-in. and 5.5-
in. diameter pile with approximately 10 feet of headroom to a depth of 50 feet and socketed into
limestone bedrock. The pile were designed for 25 and 50 tons and were used to underpin
existing pile caps that had failed due to the 100-year old wood pile. Some of the pile were also
used to support new shear walls in the core of the renovated building.
