Subsurface Constructors
MoDot, Watkins Creek/I-270, St. Louis, MO
Service: Earth Retention System
The overall scope of work on Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDot) project number J6M0006, involved emerging repairs to box culvert #J-552R, damaged during a landslide. The landslide happened along the I-270 eastbound embarkment. It damaged a 65 foot long portion of the third barrel and both southwestern wing walls of the box culvert. The project specifications repaired temporary shoring to stabilize the slope above the box culvert and protect I-270 eastbound traffic. Subsurface Constructors was the successful temporary shoring contractor. Subsurface and MoDot agreed that temporary soil nailing would be the best option.

The primary challenge on the project was construction equipment access. The relative proximity of the damaged section of box culvert to the edge of the eastbound I-270 lane severely limited the amount of working room for drilling.

A 10 foot wide access bench had to be cut across the slope to install the first row of nails. All grouting and shoring equipment had to remain at the base of the embarkment and across Watkins Creek; approximately 30 ft below and 250 ft away. The temporary soil nail wall was successfully completed ahead of schedule, and kept I-270 in service the entire project.
