Service: Augercast Piles for Building Addition
This project consisted of a new addition to the existing PCC Building at Proctor and Gamble’s Iowa City, IA facility. In order to meet the existing grades, approximately 10 feet of fill was required at the site. Based on other site areas that had been previously preloaded, the new fill along with added building loads were expected to cause settlements in excess of 5 inches due to the presence of soft, lean clays and an organic clay layer with depth.

Subsurface Constructors was hired to install augered cast-in-place piles. The design capacity of these piles was developed by Subsurface and verified by the performance of pile load tests. The load tests showed less than a half-inch of movement at 2.25 times the working load.

By working closely with the structural engineer, Subsurface was able to space the piles appropriately to allow for quick and efficient installation. Approximately 80 –16-in. diameter, 50- ft. long piles were installed in about 5 days.
