Merchants Bridge
Deep foundation work with augercast piles on essential metropolitan bridge project
Terminal Railroad completed the replacement of the western approach to the iconic Merchants Bridge, which allows trains to roar across the Mississippi River from Illinois into St. Louis, Missouri. To complete the project, Terminal Railroad enlisted Subsurface Constructors to install about 550 augercast piles covered with a load-transfer platform to support mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls. Those walls, backfilled with cellular lightweight fill, are used to support the new rail, making the existing structure obsolete. Subsurface also installed mircopile and low-overhead drilled shafts to support utility bridges and a vehicular underpass, respectively.
